This sweet suburban yard was not offering much to the owners with weedy grass and no other plants besides some overgrown roses and a solo Japanese maple. With a newly installed patio, they were finally ready to bring in some life. A retaining wall with stairs leading to an upper layer creates a sense of multiple "rooms" in the landscape, and doubles as a bench to sit for the parents while they watch their girls play.
We focused on creating traffic flow through pathways to make the yard feel explorative for their young daughters, with lots of sensory and edible plants tucked in. Evergreen shrubs for natural hedges along the property line add privacy, and lots of smaller trees create vertical height and shade. Primarily low-maintenance and drought-tolerant plants were selected as summers are the busy season for these Alaska Fishers!
Future plans include adding a garden shed, a small rain garden, and raised vegetable beds.
Thanks to Green Forest Landscaping for implementing the hardscape.
